Preparation began this week
for the start of the Great Walks
season in the Fiordland National
Hut wardens, fresh from training,
assumed their posts where they
made a spring cleaning assault
on the huts, airing mattresses,
cleaning windows and solar
panels, reconnecting water
and gas and checking for and
repairing any damage wreaked
by winter. For example, Mintaro
Hut sustained a lot of damage
from snow loading causing the
verandah on the main hut to
separate from the roof and an
emergency exit was damaged.
Howden Hut required a new flue
for the fireplace as snow loading
on the roof had placed pressure
on the existing flue.
There has also been a bit of
damage from tree falls over the
tracks which staff must do their
best to clear before October 25.
There are 16 hut rangers and one
relieving ranger, eight of whom
are new to the job. Each works
eight days on and six days off.
The longest serving hut ranger is
Clive Rule who will be stationed at
Mackenzie Hut on the Routeburn

Pania Dalley said helicopter
sorties had been ferrying supplies
to the various huts since last
week, the return flights carrying
sewage which has to be pumped
into flyable tanks to be removed
and emptied. About 3000 litres
of sewage must be removed from
each hut. More sewage is removed
in February and a resupply of
essentials lifted in.
Essential supplies include such
things as cleaning products, gas
bottles and toilet paper. During
the season a total of about 324km
of toilet paper will be used at the
In addition to hut supplies, each
hut ranger is allowed one flight
bag of personal gear for the
duration of the summer season.
This is the equivalent of about 12
banana boxes each.
It takes several weeks to prepare
for the summer season and five
or six days days to load and fly all
supplies to all of the Great Walk
huts, she said.
The Great Walks season starts on
October 25 and runs until April 26.
There are still places available but,
as usual, interest has been strong.
On the Routeburn Track 13,910
bed nights have already been
snapped up with bookings heavier
over Christmas and New Year
but space available most dates
On the Kepler there is still space
available most days with 11,344
bed nights booked.
Space is at more of a premium
on the Milford Track where
21,545 bed nights have been
booked. There is limited space
in November and bookings still
available in March and April.
Huts get geared up for Great Walks

The Te Anau Club is throwing
its doors open to the public this
weekend, thanks to a special
entertainment licence enabling all-
comers -- not just members -- to
enjoy the raft of activities planned
for the holiday weekend.
Publicity-wise it might play second
fiddle to its larger counterpart, but
the Te Anau Club's annual fishing
tournament, now in its 21st year,
is expected to be just as popular
The two-day competition is free
to enter for anyone who holds a
current fishing licence.
There are weigh-ins at the club
between 4pm and 5.30pm on
both Saturday and Sunday, with
anyone able to enter one fish each
There are categories for men,
women and children under-12
with prizes for the best condition
factor fish and special prizes and
trophies for mystery length and
Fish entered must be ungutted

salmon caught in the Southern
Prizes will be awarded both days.
Most years there are between 40
and 60 fish weighed in on each of
the two competition days.
Popular band Forbidden Fruit
is back to entertain on Saturday
night entertainment is likely to
start and finish earlier to make
way for the All Blacks versus
France Rugby World Cup final
which will be shown live on the big
screen at 9pm.
Club manager Neil McDowall said,
as Te Anau's only official Heineken
Match Day Bar, there would be
plenty of giveaways to be claimed,
including a Heineken bar fridge.
The bistro opens at 5.30pm every
night and would operate late to
feed hungry rugby fans and weary
fishermen, he said.

19 years ago have celebrated the
milestone by having a seat.

Despite the death of two of their
original partners, Margaret Taylor,
Sue Anderson and Annabel
Russell have continued to develop
and grow the iconic business in
the old Mossburn Community Hall.
Since day one they have served
hot drinks and homemade treats
from the remodelled kitchen and
today almost everything is still
made on site. Their fare enjoyed
national fame when celebrity
chefs Al Brown and Steve Logan
paid a visit during filming for their
Taste of the Wild television series
and put their venison pies on the
must-stop-for list for travellers.
As time has passed, the popularity
of the cafe has increased to the
extent that as the trio enter their
19th year they've decided to
almost double the indoor seating
Mrs Taylor said outdoor
seating had increased with the
development of the garden area
but they'd felt for some time
that more seating was needed
indoors. So from the original four
tables of four, they've added
more tables and some couches to
offer customers a more relaxing
environment to enjoy their coffee.
There's now room for 28 people to
be seated indoors.
