Friday, 14th December
embers of the Otautau community will be kicking up their
heels next Friday at the town’s popular annual Christmas
street party and you’re invited to join in.
Main Street will be closed to traffic between Otautau Joinery and
the Southland District Council offices between 5pm and 8pm
on Friday December 14th to allow residents and visitors alike to
celebrate what has been a great year for the Western Southland
The town is enjoying the buzz of business with the revamp the
Otautau Hotel and Supervalue, and also the new cafe opening on
the Main Street. Earlier in the year a new gym also opened in the
former Westpac bank building, and Vet South has taken up the
Simple Systems building.
The street party is always a huge success with the great support
from local businesses and community services, such as the fire
brigade and police. The Otautau Primary School also has a strong
presence providing great Christmas carols sung by the school
choir. The atmosphere at the street party has always been one to
get people into the Christmas spirit and this year is expected to be
Craft stalls, entertainment and food will all be available along with
a great number of raffles. The toy library will again have its bouncy
castle set up so there is great fun for all.
This year, for the first time, there will be a ‘Best Street Appeal’
property competition. The winner of this inaugural competition will
be announced at the street party.
The Otautau Play Centre has extra cause to celebrate this year,
having achieved three years running successfully as a parent-led
centre. The centre is a focal point for those families with children
under school age, providing the only government-supported early
childhood learning in the community. Others travel to Drummond
kindergarten. The centre will be running raffles and doing face
painting on the night of the street party to support its work.
Once again there is a huge variety of competitions on offer at the
Otautau Christmas Street Party.
Childrens Art competitions have a distinctly festive twist with three
age groups (up to 6 years, 7-10 years and 11-14 years) each
Entries must be dropped in to the Southland District Council offices
by Friday, December 7 and they will be displayed in Main Street
A community with one voice
The ever-popular karaoke competition is back again. There are
sections for primary and secondary school students, as well as
seniors with great prize money to be won.
If singing’s not your thing, how about having a go in the children’s
Christmas Poetry Recital at 6pm. There’s $20 to be won in the 5-8
year age group and $30 for the winner of the 9-13 year section.
Thelma, Keith and the Crew would like to thank
our customers for their patronage.
We wish you all a
