Department of Conservation rangers are
leading a trip to Lake Orbell, where takahe
were rediscovered, next Thursday (February
DOC ranger Helen Dobson said it was an
opportunity for people to visit the Takahe
Special Area in the Murchison Mountains,
which otherwise had restricted access.
Takahe, now an endangered species,
were thought to be extinct for about 50
years before they were rediscovered by
Dr Geoffrey Orbell in 1948. A 50,000ha
area has since been set aside for takahe
conservation and stoat traps are regularly
monitored. There were 107 birds in the area
at the last count, however there has been a
breeding season since then so it was hoped
the numbers were now much higher, she
This trip to Lake Orbell is offered once a
year as part of the DOC summer events
programme and is quite a challenging
hike. DOC ranger Martin Genet will be
leading the expedition along with at least
one other ranger and will provide plenty of
information on the history of the takahe
and what is currently being done. He will be
using telemetry equipment to help locate
any takahe nearby that have transmitters
attached which, according to DOC, is about
half of the birds in the Murchisons.
Participants are to meet at the Real
Journeys Visitor Centre on Lakefront Drive
in Te Anau at 8.15am on February 24.
The cost is $50 per person and bookings
A high level of fitness is required for the trip.
The postponement date is Friday, February
There are still a few places left and those
interested should contact the Fiordland
National Park Visitor Centre on 03 249

The Fiordland Arts Society is appealing to
the public for help in finding a new location
for its annual All Artists Fiordland exhibition
at Labour Weekend.
In the past the exhibition has been staged
in the main hall of the Fiordland Events
Centre but this year that venue has been
pre-booked by the Fiordland market.
President Glenda Bell said because Labour
Weekend was traditionally a hive of activity
in Te Anau, other possible venue were also
already spoken for -- for example, the rugby
club was the base for the annual fishing
classic, the yacht club for its annual regatta
and Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Villas
for the Destination Fiordland's annual
It was particularly disappointing not to
have a venue shored up as the society was
enjoying a resurgence of interest since
coming out of a brief recession two years
ago. Last year's exhibition, which brought
new exhibitors into the fold such as the
Fiordland Embroiderers' Guild and budding
school artists, had been very successful
and members had been keen to build on
"We're a bit hamstrung," Mrs Bell said.
The ideal space would be similar in size and
layout to the hall but any suggestions were
welcome, she said. Anyone with ideas was
invited to phone Glenda on (03) 249-8548
or Jan on (03) 249-4303.
